The Rock Series

I'm influenced by two ancient cultures and their connectedness to the earth and its geology, the Southwest Native Americans and the monks of the Sung Dynasty. For the Navajo and the Hopi tribes, the sense of place plays an important role in their physical and spiritual lives.  The monks, whose silk paintings, with mountains floating in negative space and absent perspective, painted not what they saw, but rather their memory of how they responded emotionally to the view well after they completed their mountain pilgrimage.

I too paint not from photographs but from memory, a collection of places and shapes, from hikes and road trips, from a subconscious response to the power of place,  a visceral reaction to the chaos of a raging river at snow melt, the gut-felt thunder of a catastrophic slide, the groan of a mountain shape-shifting.

The Earth Series

This group represents a deliberate distinction between our organized and predictable world at the horizon line, oblivious to Earth, ignorant of the pain of evolution and the movement still alive and deep within its core. All of our history is still here and present. Our ancestors, the ancients, their stories carved into eroded walls. The science of us is still present, old and new rivers gurgling from mysterious cavernous sources, and receding oceans scraping away bones into drying silt. Everything we ever were is still here, just deeply hidden. The earth has stories to tell.
